History

Current owner and co-founder of Morris & Van der Watt, Neels van der Watt is an award winning master furniture maker/joiner. He achieved this status by being recognized by the Skills SA Foundation for his talents in Vocational Training and Youth Skills development. He was also awarded and accolade by the Furniture Industry Training Board. At a young age as an SA Skills apprentice Neels achieved 1st place at Regionals and 2nd place at the Nationals in furniture making. Many craftsmen can take years to become a Master Joiner/furniture maker. Neels takes pride in his work and pursues excellence with every single detail. Being active in his trade for over 24 years makes him truly a master.

Neels and a partner established their business in 1992 in a small town known as Darling. From the original 40m2, the factory expanded first to 360m2 and then to the current 1500m2. In the process Neels became sole proprietor.

Operations

The current Darling factory employees 22 staff of which 15 are skilled traditional artisans. Neels as a hands-on-person watches over the entire production process almost full time. The factory is truly all encompassing and does all the manufacturing in-house and the factory also contains its own Duco spray booth and drying room. This allows Morris & Van der Watt to complete and assemble all projects in the factory, making use of no sub-contractors. One of their own three installation teams delivers the finished products to site without the hassle of flat packed deliveries. Morris & Van der Watt truly is a one-stop shop, avoiding sub contractors.
